During WUF-12, I participated in the “Just Urban Transitions and Shifting Labour Patterns” panel.
The panel covered the following topics: (i) Principles of Just Urban Transition – by Chloe Pottinger-Glass; (ii) New Cities: The Evolution of the ConceptAmman – by Amir Gohar; (iii) Amman as a Vibrant Climate Friendly City – by Nisreen Dauod; and (iv) A Just Urban Transition to Climate-Resilient Food Systems in Bangkok – by Pareena Prayukvonf. The entire session was moderated by Dina Kisbi.
In my presentation (the 2nd one), I explored the trajectory of new city developments in the MENA region, specifically focusing on Egypt. I analysed the practical challenges these new cities face in terms of feasibility, questioning their effectiveness in addressing key urban challenges like climate change, population growth and rural-to-urban migration. I presented the broader impact of these new cities on existing established cities, examining how directing substantial infrastructure investments toward new cities can impose social and environmental burdens on residents of existing cities. My recommendations called for a strategic shift, advocating for more inclusive planning approaches. I proposed that future strategies should prioritise engaging a diverse array of professionals and local stakeholders to create more balanced, sustainable urban solutions. This approach would encourage a broader range of insights, ultimately helping to create cities that meet the needs of both current and future residents.
