“The meanings of water and development: A workshop on A Water-Systems Approach to Understanding River Landscapes and Urban Forms”
hosted by: Linneaus University, Kalmar, Sweden.
Enjoying a fascinating seminar that re-examines the Industrial Revolution, not through the usual narrative of the steam engine, but through the overlooked yet transformative role of water mills. Lots to learn from Terje’s book: Historiens hjul og vannets makt
A powerful reminder of how history can shift when viewed from a different perspective. Truly amazed by the depth of insight that comes when we make time for meaningful intellectual engagement.
My talk explores the Nile not only as a geographic and ecological landmark but also as a social and urban space. I examine the degree to which its riverbanks are accessible to the public and reflect on how inclusive, or exclusive, these spaces have become over time.
A timely conversation on urban equity, spatial justice, and the role of rivers in shaping its surrounding urban landscapes.
The workshop included: Terje Tvedt, Univ Bergen, Univ Oslo | Terje Østigård, Linneas University Kalmar | Carl-Gösta Ojala, Uppsala University | Matt Kondolf, UC Berkeley | Charisma S. Acey, UC Berkeley | Pedro Pinto, Instituto Superior Tecnico Lisboa | Pedro Garcia, ISCTE CIES University of Lisbon | Amir Gohar, University of the West of England
