My experiences at the WUF-12 have been thought-provoking and reflective.
I won’t get into aspects like the organisation, signage, booth fees, parking, circulation, presence of non-profit sector, or sponsorship. These elements were, more or less, typical of other large-scale events, and a detailed reflection on them would require several pages.
For me, one major highlight was seeing urbanists and landscape planners that are capable of critical thinking, questioning the status quo, and making impacts on the ground. I was pleased to meet some core groups still dedicated to values like social justice and environmental protection, standing strong amid a flood of ideas and projects that often feel detached from the needs of the everyday citizen in the Global South. It was also inspiring to meet courageous, independent thinkers who persist in advocating for citizen empowerment and ecological restoration. Although few in number, those who genuinely care about these issues are inspiring, impactful, and sincere in their commitment to driving change. Their dedication gives me a lot of hope.
The WUF12 was also an opportunity to connect with life-time friends and make new ones via the global and regional placemaking networks and many other (some photos attached).
Finally, my sincere thanks to both the FES MENA and FES Egypt teams for the invitation, insightful sessions, warm hospitality, and excellent hosting. My apologies to friends, colleagues, and students I couldn’t meet due to the pre-booked demanding schedule on this trip.
