Qulaan Eco-tourism Development Plan – Red Sea, Egypt

The project begins with the preparation of an ecotourism development plan for the Southern Red Sea region, establishing a strategic framework for sustainable tourism, conservation, and community engagement. Within this framework, Qulaan is selected as a pilot site for the development of an eco-model, including low-impact facilities, visitor services, and environmentally sensitive accommodation. The project culminates in the design of an ecolodge that applies the principles of the eco-model, demonstrating an integrated approach to landscape-responsive architecture, sustainable operations, and place-based tourism development.

Qulaan is developed as a low-impact ecotourism destination that builds on its natural assets, particularly the mangroves, coastal landscapes, and surrounding desert environment. The project introduces a network of access routes and interpretation trails that guide visitors through key ecological and cultural features while supporting environmental awareness and controlled visitation. Carefully located facilities and services enhance the visitor experience without compromising sensitive ecosystems, and the development approach actively engages the local community in tourism activities, stewardship, and interpretation, ensuring that conservation, livelihoods, and visitor experience are closely aligned.
