The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site project in the Republic of South Africa focused on the integrated planning and enhancement of a landscape of exceptional cultural and scientific significance, globally recognized for its concentration of early hominid fossils, including the iconic Mrs. Ples. The work engaged both strategic and detailed levels of planning, addressing how visitors navigate, interpret, and experience the site while safeguarding its ecological and heritage value. A comprehensive signage strategy was developed to structure movement, reinforce orientation, and communicate the layered narratives of human origins embedded within the site without disrupting its character. In parallel, a water circulation system was designed to complement and sustain the existing plantation framework, ensuring efficient resource management while enhancing the environmental performance of the landscape. Together, these interventions contributed to a coherent spatial framework that balances conservation priorities with public accessibility and long-term resilience within the Cradle of Humankind.
